Birthday cake

On eating it alone
1

One winter day, you will find yourself eating birthday cake alone in a bare flat while wearing broken shoes. A circuit breaker will trip, and you will sit in darkness, the only noise the rumbling of distant traffic as life passes you by. You will send messages, and nobody will answer them. The only messages you will receive will be demands for payment else notices of the death of friends. Hunker down during this winter. Keep in mind, seasons always change. You will have summers.

Summers when friend after friend puts their arms around you, hugs you, bears you gifts and good wishes. And they will bring dancing shoes and drag you out, dancing, and you will leap and spin and feel joyous. This is how time seasons you. And the day your life ends, you will have a collection of shoes, including a pair of gleaming dancing shoes and only you will know the secret of who you danced with when wearing them. Those shoes will go to a charity shop upon your passing, to be bought by a young person who has just spent their birthday eating cake alone in broken shoes.
